The HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act provides financial incentives to physicians and other healthcare organizations to implement Electronic Health Records (EHR) to help drive down healthcare cost while improving the quality of care. This provides an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare providers to implement state-of-the-art technology that will improve the efficiency of the healthcare practice while offsetting the cost to implement these EHR systems. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services developed meaningful use criteria and an accompanying incentive payment program for eligible professionals. The Office of the National Coordinator is developing certification criteria for electronic health records. ONC believes that the criteria will support these providers in achieving meaningful use. CMS established five goals for meaningful use, including:
